Do you ever wonder how professional models stay so skinny? What do they typically eat in a day or do they even eat at all? In a Vogue Magazine article, former model and Harvard graduate Sara Ziff says that over 62 percent of models polled at New York Fashion Week have been asked to lose weight or change their body shape by their agency or by someone from the same industry. She adds that 21 percent of them have been told that they’d be dropped by their agencies unless they lose weight. Ziff, founder of Model Alliance, continues to be an advocate for models and seeks to implement laws and practices to protect them.
Model Julia Bhansali, who had a trending video on Facebook in June, received a huge amount of backlash and nasty comments for showing what her eating habits are. But what has inspired that level of hostility from strangers on internet?

Here’s what she typically eats in a day

Breakfast
- Oats with mashed bananas, strawberries, peanut butter, and chocolate chips with almond milk.
- Snack – popcorn.

Does reading what’s on the menu incite violent feelings? Let’s keep going. Megan Williams, who has modeled for Guess, Elle Magazine, Glamour and Marie Clare, says her breakfast consists of gluten-free pancakes. Lunch is chicken salad and iced tea then she snacks on a lot of fruits. For dinner she has fish tacos. She also adds that you can always find high-protein items like eggs, cheese, and peanut butter in her kitchen. Both models love chocolate.
While portions may be stingy for most people, neither their food choices are extreme, nor do they seem to starve themselves. Bhansali, in response to the negative feedback her video has accumulated, posted another video on her YouTube account. Rather than taking a defensive stance, she chose to make fun of the comments and shrug off the naysayers. She follows it up with another video sharing a couple of recipes. Banana pancakes
- One large banana, mashed.
- One whole egg and a second egg’s whites.
- Two teaspoons of protein powder.
- A dash of cinnamon.
- Vanilla extract.
- Chocolate chips.
- Mix all ingredients and scoop portions onto a hot non-stick pan.
- Serve with some strawberries, blueberries, yogurt, and peanut butter on the side.
Vegetable stir fry bowl
- Stir fry shrimp and broccoli with olive oil, garlic, onion powder, sesame seeds and creole seasoning.
- Mix salad greens with canned mushrooms and grated carrots.
- Add mixed nuts and pieces of crackers for crunch.
- Add the shrimp and broccoli to the salad mix and top with avocado and hummus.
In an industry where being overweight is an occupational hazard, finding a way to eat well and stay fit and healthy is a challenge for most models. Bhansali shows that it can be done. She seems to enjoy her meals and incorporates work outs and long walks into her routine. Perhaps what people can pick up from this is to refrain from being overly critical of practices that are very different from the usual. It’s also never too late to start eating healthier. You don’t need to be a model to do that.
