How to Get Rid of Cellulite: What Every Woman Wants to Know

What every woman wants to know: How to get rid of cellulite? Have you ever heard anyone comparing their thighs or behinds to a golf ball? Don’t see the connection? It’s that dimple-ridden appearance that is called cellulite, which seems to be Public Enemy Number One in the world of women. Everyone seems to want to get rid of it. Women all over the world spend a lot on lotions, serums and body creams all promising to make those dimples disappear. But do they really work? Can you really get rid of cellulite?

The answer is no. There is no permanent solution to cellulite. However, there are way of reducing their appearance. But first, keep in mind that cellulite is totally normal. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery reports that 85 percent of women over the age of 21 have cellulite.

The Causes of Cellulite Are Unkown

A common misconception is cellulite is directly proportional to weight. Most people believe that only people who are on the heavy side or overweight have cellulite and that’s not true at all. Even people who go to the gym daily can have cellulite.

While even specialists in the medical field cannot figure out what really causes cellulite, most believe that it depends on one’s genetics and poor lymphatic drainage.

Good Housekeeping sought the expert opinion of Dr. Robyn Gymrek, founder of Columbia University’s Cosmetic Skin and Laser Center. Number one, cellulite is not excess fat. Dr. Gymrek explains that cellulite is the result of fat cells pushing up against the skin over connective tissues, thus resulting in that dimpled appearance. She adds that it is a genetic thing and can start appearing on a woman’s butt and thighs in their early 20s. Dr. Gymrek also believe that lymphatics play a huge part in cellulite production. The lymphatic system drains the body’s wastes, and the system might be in limbo if one has an unhealthy lifestyle.

While doctors say that nothing, even the most expensive procedures, can erase cellulite permanently, there are ways to minimize their appearance.

Cosmopolitan suggests trying these at home:

Dry Brushing

Daily brushing, or any sort of massage for that matter, can reboot the lymphatic system which then detoxifies the fat layer. This lessens inflammation thus lessening the appearance of cellulite.

Retinol-infused lotions or creams

Retinol is a skincare ingredient that aids in collagen building. It plumps and smoothens up the skin and can help minimize the appearance of dimples. Retinol is photo-sensitive so it’s better using it at night.

Use a coffee scrub

Gently massage store-bought coffee scrub on areas where you have cellulite. Just like with dry brushing, it helps stimulates the lymphatic system. If you brew your own coffee at home, you can use the discarded coffee grounds in the shower. Just do not rub too harshly on skin to avoid micro tearing.

Improve your diet

Lessen your sodium intake and include fiber-rich food to help remove waste from your intestinal track. Keep yourself hydrated and exercise regularly. A healthy lifestyle will help the lymphatic system function at its best.

Doctor’s Advice

Remember that cellulite is normal and nothing to be ashamed of. What is more important is living a balanced life. A healthy body image and good role models will help anyone overcome unrealistic expectations.
